Rice & Ink: Family Chronicle is a historical family and household simulation for PC, set in Jiangnan from 1500 to 1839. You lead a household through the late Ming and Qing periods, managing its land, business, family ties and standing in the county. Choose a start year from 1500 onward; history unfolds up to that point before you begin.

The household includes its head, wife, sons, daughters-in-law, servants and retainers. People age and die, an heir takes over the house, and the rest of the county keeps changing too. Thousands of households farm, take exams, gain status or go bankrupt. Historical rules shape daily life: dress, hats, fabrics, exam quotas, funerals, laws and sentences follow their period. After the Qing conquest of 1644-1645, men are ordered to shave their foreheads and wear the queue.
