Age of the Ancients is a real-time strategy game about growing a settlement through four ages and defending it from an enemy. You direct villagers to hunt, fish, farm, chop wood and mine, then expand from a Town Hall into streets, mills, markets and a castle. Your army needs to hold its line while you manage the settlement and prepare for attacks.

Food, wood, gold and stone support the economy; crystal adds a riskier option. Advancing from the Dark Age through the Feudal and Castle Ages to the Imperial Age costs food and takes time. While an age is advancing, you can't build from it, so the timing affects which buildings, troops and upgrades you can access.
