Historical Significance of the FEF-3 Class

The FEF-3 locomotives represent a significant era in American railroading history. Built by the American Locomotive Company, this class of steam engines features a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement and served the Union Pacific Railroad during the 1940s. Known for their exceptional performance and adaptability, the FEF-3 units remained operational well past World War II, with many being converted to oil due to coal shortages. Notably, Locomotive 844 continues to operate today, making it a cherished piece of rail history.
