Game premise and mechanics

VHS // Anima 021 is a retro-style horror video game that draws inspiration from the “found footage” genre. In the game, you travel through levels searching for anomalies and capturing them on camera. Your objective is to locate glitches or orbs scattered throughout the environment, using a combination of map view and first-person view to decide when to record and when to evade threats.

Anomalies and recording

Throughout each level, you must find anomalies and then switch to “camera view” mode to capture the orbs associated with those anomalies. Successfully restoring the anomalies to a stable state allows you to interact with the main television in the environment. Doing so initiates a short minigame where you review the recorded footage to identify moments where you successfully captured anomalies.
