They Eat the Walls is a short tower defense game where players defend their structures against hordes of rats that can chew through various building materials. The premise focuses on the edible nature of the level itself, with rats either circumventing defenses or directly destroying them if taking the long route. Players must build defenses strategically and survive as long as possible before being overwhelmed.

Building and defense mechanics

In the game, you have access to nine types of cannons, including rapid-fire, mortars, flame, frost, chain lightning, and ricochet beams. You can also drop seven different things down a shaft to deal with the rat hordes. Players can construct defenses between waves, allowing for strategic placement of materials such as wood, stone, and packed mud, which all have different levels of durability against the rats.
