The Twenty-Ninth

The descent

The Twenty-Ninth is a first-person horror roguelike set in 1538. A township sends a man down the Root Way for the twenty-ninth time, and you descend through its hundred hand-cut floors to find what lies below the hundredth. The passages end where the digging stopped, and the twenty-eight who went before have left things behind, including pieces of writing.

Movement drives the turn structure: every step and turn gives the things below a turn of their own. Standing still isn't always safe, since some keep coming anyway. Your lamp reaches three paces, while your ears reach farther, so sound matters when you can't see far.
