Linear Chess

One-line chess

Linear Chess is a chess strategy game for PC played on a single line of 21 squares. Each side starts with six familiar pieces, but their moves are adapted for the narrow board. You read the position, protect your pieces and look for ways to attack through the gaps.

The queen can pass through friendly pieces. Knights jump three or four squares forward or backward, while bishops move and capture by jumping one, two or four squares. Rooks travel along the line but are blocked by friendly pieces. You can set up castling to bring a rook back into play, and each pawn can step backward once per game.
