Liberation Through Hearing

Opera platform game

Liberation Through Hearing is a PC interactive opera structured like a two-dimensional platform game. Its story draws on the Bardo Thodol, or The Tibetan Book of the Dead, which describes the deceased’s consciousness traveling between death and rebirth. You guide a morphing protagonist through digital spaces and past imaginary creations.

Movement and music

You move forward through two-dimensional space, with no scoring, winners or losers. As you cross and interact with the hand-drawn scenes, you create the music. Each section follows a theme from the libretto, and the work is composed and drawn throughout rather than built from repeating patterns.
