Building the railway

Iron Trails is a PC railway simulation set in a valley with terrain, interchanges and industries waiting for rail connections. You survey and lay track between them, shaping the route to the ground rather than placing it freely. High spots need cutting through and hollows need filling, while grades can’t exceed 3%.

Curves affect train speed according to their radius, and a layout check shows where the railway will slow trains. Terrain tools let you raise, lower, flatten and smooth the ground, with contour lines to guide your work. Turnouts are specified by details such as frog number, switch points and lead radius, so a No. 14 turnout follows those dimensions.
