ABOUT THIS GAME

The Power of Cards in BROODHOUSE

In BROODHOUSE, players harness the unique blend of deck-building mechanics and strategic gameplay on PC. Your power lies not in the cards you draw, but in those you cannot. Each creature card is part of a strain that, when played, delivers damage based on the total population of that strain across your entire deck, including discarded cards and those in your hand. This shifts the focus from finding the right card to ensuring diversity within your colony.

Harvesting or Sowing: Strategic Choices

Every turn presents a critical decision: HARVEST your strain for immediate damage or SOW it to cultivate a stronger future. The mechanics function without an energy bar. Instead, each card played draws from a hand of five, and the choice of damage directly influences your potential for growth. There’s a delicate balance, tempting players to gamble between short-term gain and long-term strategy.

Managing Carrying Capacity and Breeding Dynamics

The concept of carrying capacity is central to BROODHOUSE. Each strain has a cap, and exceeding it leads to the birth of Feral cards—deadweight that clutters your deck and complicates gameplay. However, they also fill a unique role as fuel for BLOOM, a powerful response mechanism that can be detonated under specific conditions. Navigating this duality demands careful management of your strains while anticipating the repercussions of your choices.

The Destructive Power of BLOOM

BLOOM offers high-stakes gameplay, allowing players to transform their mistakes into weaponized assets. By accumulating six Feral cards, players can build this explosive mechanism. When detonated, it resets all strains to their caps, allowing for a strategic refresh of your colony. Holding onto it too long escalates the stakes, injecting tension into every decision made on your turn.

Enemy Mechanics: Anticipate and Adapt

Enemies in BROODHOUSE actively observe and adapt to your breeding patterns, presenting players with a tell for their incoming attacks. Each of the nineteen enemies telegraphs their moves two turns in advance, requiring players to meet specific conditions to mitigate damage. This adds an element of prediction, making every turn not just about your own strategy, but actively countering threats.

Contracts Change the Rules of the Game

Before engaging in a run, players sign a Contract that dramatically alters gameplay rules. Each run features unique modifiers, such as Drought, which increases strain limits, or Bare Hands, which removes mechanics entirely. These Contracts force players to adapt their strategies on the fly, ensuring that no two runs play out the same. The variability keeps every game fresh and engaging, with players needing to rethink their approach repeatedly.

Your Legacy: Documenting Each Run

At the end of a run, you aren't just left with a score; you receive a Herbarium specimen page that documents all your achievements. This includes the strains cultivated, any mutations encountered, peak population numbers, and the specific Contract signed for that game. This system not only provides a sense of accomplishment but also emphasizes the unique nature of your colony—each player's experience will differ markedly from others, creating a lasting legacy to reflect upon.
