Historical Background of Alco's Diesel Locomotives

The Alco FA series marks a significant chapter in American railroad history. Originating in January 1946, the FA1 version delivered a formidable 1,500-horsepower. By 1950, the improved FA2 brought even more power at 1,600-horsepower. This expansion of the Alco lineup allowed for greater operational diversity across various railroads, especially within the Pennsylvania Railroad system, which embraced these locomotives from 1946 through the late 1960s.
