Historical Significance of the Castle Class Loco

Originally introduced by Chief Mechanical Engineer Charles Collett in 1923, the Castle Class locomotives quickly gained recognition for their power and speed. These locomotives were heralded as the most formidable express passenger engines in Britain, capable of reaching an average speed of 80 mph (129 km/h) and hitting top speeds of up to 108 mph (174 km/h). Over the years, 171 of these magnificent machines were built, many of which have been preserved and still run on special railtour services today.
